Personality[]

Mayumi is an exceptionally sweet and exceedingly intelligent young woman. At first, her kind qualities make her appear shy, but truthfully, she is anything but. She’s clever and sharp-witted, quick to point out others’ errors and shut down conflict but also to tell it to you straight. Despite this, she is the type of person that it’s almost impossible to hate, constantly looking out for others and supporting them. Mayumi also possesses an outstanding work ethic and drive, inspiring those around her whether she realizes it or not.

The top student in her graduating class, Mayumi shirks away from the spotlight whenever she can. Feeling undeserving of the praise often given to her, she believes that her best friend, Makoto, was meant for the pedestal she has been placed upon. For the longest time, he was, but when he went missing, her peers and teachers immediately began revering her instead. She holds a small bitterness against those who seem to have forgotten him but is determined that she will find him and put him back where he belongs.

Appearance[]

Mayumi’s personality really comes through in her personal wardrobe - cute, functional, and otherwise unassuming. She wears a short-sleeved off-white turtleneck dress with a broad red stripe across the waist and red buttons that match the red orbed hair ties that pull up her twintails. Over her dress, she sports a long muted lavender cardigan with a hood, and she wears purple and black galaxy leggings along with simple red flat shoes.

History[]

Mayumi was born to Chie, a successful real estate agent, and Hideki Katsuragi, a well-respected lawyer. Neither of her parents possessed Reflections and pursued incredibly advantageous careers with their will and intellect, providing Mayumi a safe and well-adjusted life within the heart of Central. When it was discovered that Mayumi possessed a powerful Reflection, it seemed only natural for Mayumi to attend one of the best private Nurseries in the city.

Sure enough, Mayumi’s application passed with flying colors, and the Nursery began recommending advanced placement courses and a rigorous training schedule to the Katsuragi family. Stressed out by what kind of future this would hold for her, Mayumi escaped to her usual getaway - her favorite arcade - and participated in a local fighting game tournament.

It was at this tournament where she met (and beat) Mitsuki and took the grand prize. Seeing his school uniform, she offered him the prize - a year’s worth of free meals at the bar - so that she could sit down and talk to him. Mitsuki gratefully took the offer for free food and began bonding with Mayumi over her own love of games, and in turn, Mayumi learned about Hanasaka Academy and decided the smaller, public school was better suited to her interests.

With a bit of work, Mayumi managed to convince her parents to permit her to go to Hansaka instead, and the next year, she enrolled into Mitsuki’s school. Her natural genius propelled her to the top of her class instantly and garnered a lot of attention, pushing her into an almost celebrity status amongst the student body. This spotlight brightened on her when she became the first student to skip grades at the new school.

However, the spotlight shone brightest on Makoto Kiwamura, the son of a former police detective, for his own superior intellect and charming personality. Ever since she began studying at Hanasaka, Mayumi had admired Makoto for how easy he made the stress of being in the spotlight appear, having a bit of performance anxiety herself.

When she skipped grades, Mayumi was placed in the same class as Makoto, who instantly became enamored with her own personality, and the two became fast friends. Unfortunately, just as they were about to make their plans for their senior year and graduation together, Makoto disappeared, leaving behind a worn notebook in her mailbox with his years of research regarding various conspiracy theories he had been investigating.

The moment Makoto disappeared, the spotlight at school turned back onto Mayumi full-force with everyone ignoring the memory of her best friend. Convinced that Makoto was still alive based only on his notebook, Mayumi applied to Koukai Agency - something he referenced frequently in his notes - and began obsessing over researching where he left off, certain that the closer she got to the answers there, the closer she’d get to finding him and putting him back on the pedestal where he belongs.

Powers & Abilities[]

Mayumi’s weapon of choice is a bow named Azusa (梓), named so for the Azusa Yumi of legend. A sacred musical bow, the Azusa Yumi was able to dispel evil with the mere pluck of a string. Mayumi’s Azusa is adorned with a gold-carved bird, alluding to the golden bird that perched atop the Azusa Yumi that belonged to Emperor Jimmu, great-grandson of the goddess Amaterasu.

Mayumi’s Reflection is Omoikane (思兼), granting her the ability to link minds together. Yet another allusion, Mayumi is able to tie herself to others with the red spirit string that is attached to her pinky (ie: the Red String of Fate), which she uses to string her bow. She then uses her pinky to pull back the string as well, aiming and releasing an “arrow” of spiritual energy into the heart of her opponent. After connecting them, she can manipulate their mind and foster illusions. This mental connection also gives Mayumi insight into their memories and entire mindspace.

Memai 目眩 = Once connected, the sensation of dizziness akin to vertigo takes over the opponent and puts them off-balance.

Fukushi 複視 = Once connected, the object in the opponent’s primary sight doubles, creating illusory doppelgangers.

Iromegane 色眼鏡 = Once connected, the opponent witnesses a sequence of events that they desire as an outcome.
